Technology scams – here and there, everywhere

Andrea Rossi is by no means the only one who tries to benefit from people not understanding technology and science. We have several other technology scams going on, take Steorn Orbo or Blacklight Power, for example.

It’s nothing new, anyone remember the Great Oil Sniffer hoax of 1979? [1]

It has happened several times in Finland too! And amazingly, the fraudsters often go unpunished.

There was one case in Finland couple of years ago, that lead to conviction ( probation only). The “inventor” raised about million euros from private people to develop a new type of battery, that did not exist. He even seemed to have taken the idea for his invention from a famous Finnish novel and still managed to raise the money, and seemingly win a technology award by Frost&Sullivan [2].

Rainer Partanen, “inventor” of the nano-battery, advertising his emission on newspaper.

However, he did not know financial law very well, so his emission turned out to be illegally arranged. In investigation, it turned out that he had used only couple of thousand euros for developing his nano-battery, while keeping the rest of the money for himself.

While the inventor of the amazing nano-battery got convicted [3], there have been other scams in Finland gone unpunished, because no litigant ever complaint.

One other Finnish guy raised several million euros from private investors. He claimed to have developed a theory of everything, and a new energy source of course. Wrote a book about it, called “We live in a black hole” and found a company. There where also quite famous, wealthy, and influential Finnish and Swedish people in the board of directors, amazingly enough [4]

His theory was far crazier [5] than any of the cold fusion/LENR nonsense, and still some people fell for it. And yes, he got away with it and the company’s web pages are long gone, thought the company itself seems to exist in some form. This happened in Finland just a couple of years ago.

Finland is a small country of just five million people, and even we have had several technology scams. Wonder how many scams are going on in the world right now?

It’s a strange planet and man is a strange animal.

Miracles, investments and public humiliations

A miracle has supposedly happened.

A big British investment company seem to have put a substantial sum to Industrial Heat LLC [3]. You know, the same company that funded Andrea Rossi’s [1] cold fusion gadget last year.

You should always remember, that it ain’t over until the fat lady sings: the LENR is real!

Well, it has been one hell of a ride of the valkyries and the pathoskeptics defeat will be complete, especially now that Andrea Rossi has his research lab of non-existing materials up and running.

I am soon to face my public humiliation in the stocks.

Oh well, so is life. To mitigate the damage to my reputation and personal life, I better put all my savings to Woodford Management [2].

On the other hand, how does the old saying go: A fool and his money are soon parted.

[1] Pathoskeptic on Andrea Rossi

Rossi has been granted US patent on the E-Cat — fuel mix specified

LENR fanatics are getting technorgasms over this one. But the rest of the world couldn’t care less.

Believe me, I would rather have this to be true, just that it is not.

Who really knows what the truth is. However, very often it is easy to spot a falsehood.

This patent adds nothing to Andrea Rossi’s credibility, and the funny thing is that it is not even about LENR or cold fusion. It is just a controlled Italian water heater, which I don’t think would work, if build according to specs using the described fuel.

(Last updated on August 25, 9.17 pm CET). Today Andrea Rossi was granted a patent on his LENR based heating device the E-Cat. The patent, which has the filing date March 14, 2012, can be downloaded here: US9115913B1

As far as I understand, the patent describes the so-called low temperature E-Cat that Rossi showed in semi-public demonstrations at several occasions in 2011, and which is also used in an ongoing 350-day trial of a 1 MW plant, but since it describes core parts of the technology it is probably also valid at a certain extent also for more recent E-Cat models with higher operating temperature.

Note that LENR is not mentioned explicitly in the patent, but also note that the contents of the fuel mix are specified — lithium and lithium aluminium hydride as fuel and a group 10 element, such as nickel in powdered form as the catalyst. This is important…

Silly science news – the EM-Drive is back

Roger Shawyer’s Em-Drive is back in the news, and we are seeing really funny news-lines, like The Telegraph’s super silly  ‘Impossible’ rocket drive works and could get to Moon in four hours [1].

Fours hours? Where did they get that part. Oh well, I guess someone used a calculator, but forgot to think.

Well, the fuss seems to be, that Martin Tajmar [2] from Dresden university has now confirmed, that E-Drive really produces thrust. Similar results, that NASA’s Eagleworks claimed last year [4].

“Our test campaign cannot confirm or refute the claims of the EM Drive but intends to independently assess possible side-effects in the measurements methods used so far,” said Prof Tajmar.

“Nevertheless, we do observe thrust close to the actual predictions after eliminating many possible error sources that should warrant further investigation into the phenomena.”

I am sure Tajmar is a nice guy, but he is also a big fan of funny and unrealistic theories. He has previously worked with for example anti-gravity [3]

So, taking into account that Em-Drive goes against everything we know about conservation of momentum and energy, and is in contradiction with both classical physics and relativity, which of the two is more probable:

  1. The Em-Dive really DOES work can take us to the Moon in 4 hours!
  2. The measurements by Tajmar and others are in error

Thinking is allowed. Bad science has always paired nicely with bad journalism.

Freedom of speech

Finnish politician Olli Immonen has used his freedom of speech:

”I’m dreaming of a strong, brave nation that will defeat this nightmare called multiculturalism. This ugly bubble that our enemies live in, will soon enough burst into a million little pieces. Our lives are entwined in a very harsh times. These are the days, that will forever leave a mark on our nations future. I have strong belief in my fellow fighters. We will fight until the end for our homeland and one true Finnish nation. The victory will be ours.” [1]

– Olli Immonen, member of Finnish Parliament, The True Finns Party

I like it, feels like stepping on dogshit barefooted, but on the other had, it is good to know the turd is there.

The bastard, who became me

Of course, I am an evil bastard.

But only to those who have it coming. You see, I am not worried about saving true believers souls [1], I cannot possibly hope achieve that much. But am worried, that some people actually can, and do believe, that these free energy fantasies are part of reality.

Believing is human nature for most of us and skepticism must be learned, same goes for me.

As small as it may be, I like to fight pseudoscience and false knowledge with everything I can. Of course, I could get lost in the process, and my methods can be freely criticized.

E-Cat/ LENR is by no means the only thing I find distastefully reality-twisting. There are a lot others. But I find LENR a bit more challenging to doubt than for example UFOs, moon landing conspiracies, intelligent design or parapsychology. There already are a lot of debunkers taking care of those already.

I also find this cold fusion mess quite interesting, because it seems not to appear as immediately impossible to laymen, myself included. Or not even to very intelligent and educated people.

What if I am wrong? Rest assured; when the E-Cat finally becomes a viable energy source and my house is heated with the miracle, I will be the first to apologize to all.

I feel great today, but maybe it does not last much longer.

So hugs and kissed to everyone, and let the show go on.

Banned again

Recently, I have been trolling on LENR Forum [1]. Don’t know why, but these guys drive me crazy. Probably it is all that “not even wrong” stuff the site is all about.

But I gotta give them credit for resilience: I had to turn real nasty until got banned.

First, they started to delete my messages without any apparent reason,  greetings to David Nygren and Barty. Other posts, more evil in tone, where allowed to stay, and that is what I hate the most in forum moderation.

The moderation incoherence made me still nastier, and finally they threw me out.

Now I get a funny message:

It seems, I have insulted them. Shame on me.

Serves me well. My time is better used elsewhere. And my Big Oil check is late again, so why bother.

Meanwhile, LENR zombification is spreading. New victims in Iceland [2].

But this time LENR seems to cause radiation [3]. Now, this is a totally new breed of LENR, in sharp contrast with Andrea Rossi’s fairytale gadget, that is supposed to produce no radiation what so ever (which I actually do believe).

Of course, this guy seem to be more credible than Rossi, but I still call bullshit on this one. As a pathological skeptic, that is my duty.
